Chargers’ Starting QB Tyrod Taylor Unlikely to Play in Week 3

It looks like Los Angeles Chargers will have to rely on rookie Justin Herbert to take over under center for the second consecutive week. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chargers’ starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor is unlikely to play in Week 3 due to complications caused by medical therapy.

Taylor received a painkiller injection ahead of Week 2 game against Kansas City Chiefs to address a nagging rib injury. However, the 31-year-old quarterback never took to the field, as he experienced chest pain and had to be taken to the hospital.

Chargers are expected to be cautious with Taylor, especially since Herbert put on an impressive showing against the Chiefs in his NFL debut. Despite learning that he will start just minutes before the kick-off, the 22-year-old Oregon product held his ground and even pushed the game to overtime before Kansas City snatched a 20-23 win thanks to a field goal.

Herbert, who was this year’s No. 6 overall pick, finished the game with 311 yards and a touchdown while completing 66.7 percent of his passes.

While Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn insisted that Tyrod Taylor will remain the starter if he’s healthy, it wouldn’t be surprising if things change with another impressive performance from Herbert. Taylor was in the same situation in 2018 with Cleveland Browns, when he started the season under center but then lost the job to rookie Baker Mayfield after suffering a minor injury.
