Chargers’ TE Hunter Henry “Fine” Playing Under Franchise Tag in 2020

Tight end Hunter Henry doesn’t seem to mind that he still doesn’t have a long term contract with Los Angeles Chargers. During a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Henry said he is “fine” with playing out 2020 under the franchise tag that Chargers placed on him back in April.

Henry, who was a second-round pick in 2016, and Chargers previously worked on an extension earlier this year and were reportedly really close to making a deal. The talks, however, stalled the past couple of months, and the team used the franchise tag in order to prevent the 25-year-old to go somewhere else.

And while there were cases when players weren’t pleased with playing under the tag, Henry doesn’t seem bothered with the situation.

“I think it’s fine,” said Henry. “Obviously, I think I would like to get something done. Just security, and long term and just with the team and the franchise. It’s another year of playing football, man, that’s how I look at it.”

Henry already signed his franchise tender and is taking part in Chargers’ offseason program. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a long term extension or they will have to wait until the end of the season to resume talks.

“Whatever the situation is, I’ll be looking forward to going out with this squad,” he added. “I’m really looking forward to this team, the potential, and what we have going for us in this 2020 season.”

Since entering the NFL, Hunter Henry showed big promise at the tight end position but also had a tough time staying on the field. After getting eight touchdowns and earning PFWA All-Rookie Team honors in his rookie year, Henry had a strong campaign in 2017, but was forced to miss the final two games of the season with a knee injury.

Henry returned in time for offseason workouts in 2018, but then suffered an ACL injury that ruled him out for a year. He managed to return in time for 2019, although last season wasn’t without injury issues as he missed four games with tibia plateau fracture.
