Premier League powerhouse Chelsea decided to take a more sensible approach in its search for a permanent manager after firing Graham Potter last week. In the meantime, the London club decided to bring in its legendary midfielder and former head coach Frank Lampard, who will serve as a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Chelsea finalized the move on Thursday, with Lampard attending a training session the same day.

“It was a pretty easy decision for me. This is my club, in terms of my playing career and having managed and coached here before. I have a lot of emotions and feelings towards the club, “said Lampard at a press conference.

Chelsea sacked Potter on Sunday, ending his stint with the club after just seven months. Potter lost 11 of his 31 games in charge, with the tipping point being a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend.

The club reportedly has a long list of managers it is considering for Potter’s successor, but didn’t want to rush the hiring in order to avoid repeating previous mistakes. Some of the names mentioned include Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, and Mauricio Pochettino.

Frank Lampard is an absolute legend at Stamford Bridge, being Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer and helping the club win three Premier League titles and UEFA Champions League as a player. Lampard also managed the club from June 2019 to January 2021 before being sacked after a poor run of results.
