Chelsea has submitted an official bid of €50 million to Ajax for the transfer of Edson Alvarez, sources confirmed on Thursday. This comes after manager Thomas Tuchel expressed anxiety regarding the Blues’ midfield options following their shock 2-1 defeat to Southampton on Wednesday night.

With N’Golo Kante unable to play for a month due to a hamstring injury, Chelsea set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong as a reinforcement. The club’s pursuit of the Dutchman ended in failure, however, as De Jong expressed no interest in leaving Camp Nou.

Injuries aside, Chelsea also has to consider that Kante and fellow central midfielder Jorginho have less than a year left on their contracts with the team. This made the signing of Alvarez all the more important, especially since he may prove to be a long-term solution for the club.

After enduring two losses and a draw during their first five Premier League games, Chelsea is desperate to turn their fortunes around and will hope that the arrival of Alvarez will help in this pursuit.
