Chelsea FC recently announced the signing of free-agent defender Malang Sarr on a five-year deal. The 21-year-old player, who was formerly a Nice player, is expected to spend the 2020/21 season out on loan in order to gain the game time needed to make it into Frank Lampard’s squad.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia had this to say regarding The Blues’ latest acquisition: “The opportunity to sign Malang was one we could not miss. He is a tremendous prospect and we will be monitoring him closely during his loan period, hoping he will soon be back at Chelsea.”

After graduating from Nice’s youth academy, Sarr was included in the French side’s first-team set-up at just 17-years-old. He notably scored on his debut to seal a 1-0 win over Rennes in August 2016. The Senegalese international made 119 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, bagging three goals during his time there.

Sarr is known to be a versatile defender, fitting in at centre-back in a back four, the left side of a back three or at full-back. It’s his diverse skillset that made him the transfer target of several other clubs, including the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke.
