Chelsea’s talented midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is facing a long pause after he ruptured Achilles’ tendon in a Wednesday night’s 3-0 friendly against New England Revolution. According to projections, Loftus-Cheek, who underwent surgery on Thursday, will be out for several months and could miss a good portion of the next season.

Loftus-Cheek suffered the injury in 63rd minute, entering the game at the halftime. It first appeared that the 23-year-old suffered an ankle sprain but the MRI showed that the injury was a lot worse.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s injury couldn’t come in a worse moment for Chelsea as the team still has UEFA Europe League Finals’ match left to play. The team was also handed a transfer ban, meaning they can’t bring in new players, and being without Loftus-Cheek for the start of the next season could additionally hurt their chances to compete in Premier League.

Loftus-Cheek played a total of 24 games in the domestic league this season, contributing with six goals and two assists. He also played 11 games in Europa League, where he scored four goals.
