Chelsea suffered a major blow to their chances of Champions League qualification following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of the high-flying Sheffield United.

While the Blues started the day in third place on the Premier League standings with 60 points, they failed to widen their points margin from Leicester City and Manchester United who both remain hot on their trail.

Leicester City currently sits in 4th place with 59 points while Manchester United is in 5th with 58 points. What’s more, both of these teams have a game in hand, meaning that a win from either side would see Chelsea lose their footing.

While the Blues performed admirably during their impressive victories over Man City and Leicester City in June, they endured a challenging start to the month of July, losing 3-2 to West Ham United. They also struggled in their narrow 3-2 win over mid table side Crystal Palace.

The game with Sheffield United had plenty of thrills, with The Blades proving to be clinical from the get go. David McGoldrick scored his maiden Premier League goal in the 18th minute, with Oli McBurnie doubling The Blades’ lead in the 33rd minute. After 77 minutes, McGoldrick doubled his tally to wrap up the scoring. The fact that Sheffield United only had 24% possession made their victory even more impressive.
