The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs picked up right where they left off last season, beating the Houston Texans in their season opener 34-20.

The Chiefs and their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes looked virtually unstoppable on offense all night, marching down the field seemingly at will. As if the Chiefs offense wasn’t potent enough last season, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a brilliant performance and adds yet another weapon to Mahome’s already potent arsenal.

Edwards-Helaire ran for 138 yards and scored a touchdown. He is the first rookie to run for over 100 yards and score a touchdown in his debut since New York Giants star runner Saquon Barkley in 2018.

Mahomes looked to be in mid-season form as well, throwing for 211 yards and three touchdowns, one apiece to tight end Travis Kelce and wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill.

Kansas City’s defense had a strong game as well. Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson was constantly under duress, throwing for one touchdown and one interception. The only positive news for the Texans on Thursday night was the performance of running back David Johnson, who looked like his old self running for a touchdown and 77 total yards.
