Tyronn Lue is returning to the NBA, but in a slightly different role than you might expect. According to the New York Times’ Marc Stein, Lue is close to being hired as an assistant head coach with the Los Angeles Clippers.

This move will see Lue being reunited with Doc Rivers, who gave him his first coaching job. Rivers hired Lue as part of Boston Celtics staff back in 2009 and brought him along when he took the job with the Clippers in 2013.

Tyronn Lue last served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who fired him in October 2018 after 0-6 start of the season. During his time in Cleveland, he posted 128-83 record and went to three straight NBA Finals while winning the NBA title in 2016

Lue was one of the favorites to take over Los Angeles Lakers after the departure of Luke Walton this summer, but ended up pulling out of the negotiations. Reportedly, Lakers didn’t present him with a good offer, and the organization wanted to have a say in hiring the coaching staff.
