Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is out for the season after suffering a gruesome ankle injury in the third quarter of Dallas’s Sunday afternoon victory over the New York Giants.

Prescott was brought down awkwardly by Giants safety Logan Ryan. Cameras caught the awful injury, showing Prescott sitting on the turf with his foot facing the wrong direction. He was taken to the hospital and had immediate surgery on his right ankle.

The injury couldn’t come at a worse time for Prescott. He was putting up career numbers, throwing for over 450 yards in each of his last three games. Prescott is also playing for a big contract. The quarterback was looking for a big extension this offseason but the Cowboys couldn’t get one done with the 27-year-old quarterback.

Prescott was playing this year on a one-year franchise tag worth $31.4m this season. Coming into the game, he was leading the NFL in completions (137), attempts (201), and passing yards (1,690).

Veteran Andy Dalton stepped in for Prescott and was able to do enough to get Dallas the win on a last-second field goal, winning the game 37-24.

The Cowboys are now atop the terrible NFC East division with a 2-3 record while the Giants remain winless, starting the season 0-5.
