After starting his career with the Minnesota Vikings, defense end Everson Griffen is headed back to the NFC North.

The Dallas Cowboys gave Griffen a one-year, $6 million contract this year to get him from the Vikings, but have decided to part with him before the trade deadline.

Griffen has been traded to the Detroit Lions for a conditional sixth-round pick. The Cowboys have been having a rough season and are no longer the potential Super Bowl contenders that they thought they were in August, which makes it a wise decision for them to save some money by splitting Everson’s contract with the Lions.

The Cowboys have been going through a lot of dysfunction ever since they lost their starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a season-ending ankle injury that has included players telling media that they were unhappy with first-year coach Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff.

Griffen will not be available to play for the Lions this Sunday because of COVID-19 protocols, but there’s a good chance that he could get his first start with Detriot on November 8, when the Lions are scheduled to play the team that drafted him, the Vikings.

Griffen was drafted in 2010 by Minnesota and player ten seasons with the Vikings. In seven games with the Cowboys this year, the veteran defensive end has recorded 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles.
