ATP world number four Daniil Medvedev defeated ninth-ranked Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to win the 2023 Miami Open. This is Medvedev’s fourth ATP title of the year.

Medvedev has proven to be one of the most in-form men’s singles players this year, having made five consecutive finals and winning 24 of his previous 25 matches. His only loss came against Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final.

“It’s the best start to a season I’ve ever had,” Medvedev observed following his victory. “It’s been [an] amazing amount of [ATP points] won. I’m super happy.”

Sunday’s final proved to be fairly one-sided, with Medvedev winning the competition in straight sets after just one hour and 34 minutes.

For Sinner, illness prevented him from performing at his best. The 21-year-old player was visited by a trainer midway through the first set, receiving a packet of salt to pour into his water bottle. He went on to experience mild cramping during the second set.

“It helped me a little bit but not enough,” Sinner said of the salt he received from the trainer. “When you wake up like this, there’s not magical things.”
