David De Gea decided to put an end to the rumors surrounding his future and has signed a new deal with Manchester United. The club confirmed on Monday that De Gea inked a multi-year extension which will keep him with the team at least until summer of 2023.

Although Man Utd didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal, Telegraph reports that De Gea will earn $465,825 a week, which will make him the highest-paid player on the club’s roster. Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez earns $621,100 a week, but he is currently on loan with Italian side Inter Milan.

“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club, and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour,” – said De Gea after getting the deal done. “Since I arrived here I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”

David De Gea joined Manchester United in 2011 from La Liga side Atletico Madrid and quickly established himself as one of the team’s key players. During his time in England, he also developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world of soccer.

Given Man Utd’s decline in recent years, De Gea was linked with a move with clubs like PSG, Juventus and Real Madrid pursuing his services this summer. However, the Spaniard decided to remain in the Premier League and take some time to think about his next step. Ultimately, he was won over by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the project he is trying to build for the future.

Solskjaer himself couldn’t be happier that De Gea decided to remain with the team.

“Over recent years, David has proved himself to be the best in the world and a vital part of our plans as we look to take Manchester United back to where it belongs,” – said Solskjaer. “David is a fantastic person, and his outstanding quality provides the perfect base to our defense.”
