After hitting free agency following two excellent seasons in the Bronx, many figured that it was inevitable that the Yankees and DJ LeMahieu would find a way to make things work to keep the Louisiana native in Pinstripes for the foreseeable future.

Over the weekend, the two sides managed to finally make a deal that worked for both sides after the infielder agreed to a six-year, $90 million deal with New York.

LeMahieu had always been a solid infielder throughout his career with the Cubs and Rockies, but he hit a different gear after signing a two-year deal with the Yankees prior to the 2019 season. He was an integral part of the Yankees’ success over the past two seasons, batting .336 with 36 home runs, 126 RBI, and 43 doubles in 195 games.

He took home the AL batting title in 2020, the second time he had done so in his career and the first time a Yankee finished with the highest batting average in the league since Bernie Williams in 1998.

LeMahieu is set to serve as the Yankees’ starting second baseman in 2021 and in the foreseeable future. He will report to camp in Tampa next month.
