Ahead of the NFL trade deadline earlier in November, the Baltimore Ravens reported had a deal in place to acquire veteran All-Pro defensive tackle Calais Campbell from the Miami Dolphins. However, the trade didn’t go through because the Dolphins’ head coach, Mike McDaniel, vetoed it.
The Ravens were apparently looking to shore up their defense and viewed Campbell as a perfect addition to their defensive front. The Dolphins were also open to the deal because it would net them a fifth-rounder and get some salary off the books.
However, once he found out about the deal, McDaniel objected. He believed that Campbell was indispensable for the team, both on and off the field, and personally talked with the player to convince him not to go.
Calais also confirmed this in a chat with the Miami Herald.
“We had a great conversation. Me and Mike talked about where we are as a team. We came to the conclusion that this team still has a lot of fight left, and we have a chance to do something special,” Calais said.
Despite turning 38 in September, Calais Campbell has been one of the Dolphins’ best defensive players in 2024. He started all 11 games and has 4.0 sacks, 34 tackles, seven QB hits, five pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
