The Miami Marlins will have a new face in the dugout for the 2023 MLB season. Don Mattingly, who served as Marlin’s manager since 2016, confirmed that he would leave the franchise at the end of this year’s campaign.

Explaining his decision, Mattingly said that he recently had talks with Marlins’ general manager Kim Ng and part-owner Bruce Sherman, with all parties deciding it is time to move on. It will be a peaceful breakup considering that Mattingly will be out of contract after 2022 wraps up.

“I think always, you try to follow your heart,” Mattingly said. “And that’s what I do. Honestly, you know what’s inside of you, and you try to be deliberate and let things work through, and you just follow your heart, and you know when it’s the right thing.”

Don Mattingly was hired by the Marlins ahead of the 2016 MLB season. In his seven years with the franchise, he had one winning season. Miami finished the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign with a 31-29 record and made it to the National League Division Series before being eliminated by the Atlanta Braves. The franchise is currently sitting fourth in NL East with no chances of making it to the postseason.

Mattingly, who previously served as a manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers as well, has a 437-584 record with the Marlins. He was named the NL Manager of the Year in 2020.
