Philadelphia Eagles had to wait until Week 4 to get their first win of the season, but even then, it wasn’t late for them to sit at the top of NFC East. Thanks to an embarrassingly bad division, the Eagles are well and alive in the playoff chase with a 1-2-1 record.

It’s no secret that the Eagles are struggling early in the 2020 NFL season, and their poor form showed up against the injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Despite rotating their backup and the third-string quarterback under center, the 49ers were a big problem for Philly and were in the lead well into the fourth quarter.

With 5:56 remaining in the contest, the Eagles finally managed to get a breakthrough thanks to an unlikely hero in wideout Travis Fulgham. During a 2nd&18, Philly’s quarterback Carson Wentz threw a deep ball to the left side, connecting with Fulgham for a spectacular 42-yard touchdown.

Fulgham was activated from the practice squad on Saturday and was playing in his season debut and just fourth career game in NFL.

“It’s just cool,” said Wentz about the game-changing TD. “We broke the huddle, I told him to be ready. I’ve seen him with this team for a while now, going up against our defense on the scout team and what he does to our defense. … I was just proud of him for coming out here tonight and making the plays when asked to.”

Philly managed to score again on the following possession thanks to Alex Singleton’s pick-six, taking the game out of the 49ers’ reach. San Francisco did score the touchdown before the clock run out, but it was too late for it to make any difference.

Eagles will face Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5, looking to extend their half of game lead over their division rivals. New York Giants are at the bottom of NFC East with a 0-4 record, with Dallas Cowboys (1-2-0) and Washington (1-2-0) occupying the middle two spots.
