Speculation around the Philadelphia Eagles’ decision to omit Jalen Hurts from the teamsheet for the preseason game against the New England Patriots was put to rest on Friday, with the team announcing that the quarterback has been suffering from a stomach infection. With Hurts’ absence, the Eagles suffered an emphatic 35-0 loss.

According to coach Nick Sirianni, Hurts’ was transported to a local hospital for inspection after suffering from abdominal pain. Following his examination, Hurts’ was advised to rest at home for two days, and was also found to have tested negative for COVID-19. Currently, he is said to be in a stable condition.

Sirianni explained that because Hurts is “a tough guy”, the issue must have been serious if he was complaining about the pain. He further added that Hurts “really wanted to play. And we decided it just wasn’t in the best interest of the team and of him.”

In place of Hurts, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took the field against the Patriots. Flacco wrapped up the evening with 10-of-17 for 83 yards and one interception.
