Eagles’ OL Jason Peters Returns to Left Tackle After Brief RG Experiment

Facing depth issues at offensive line, Philadelphia Eagles resigned veteran Jason Peters in July with the intention of lining him at right guard instead of injured Pro Bowler Brandon Brooks. Peters then spent the entire training camp playing RG, but it appears he won’t be playing there once the season kicks off.

Eagles’ head coach Doug Pederson told reporters on Monday that Peters abandoned the idea of playing right guard and will return to left tackle, where he spent the last 14 years of his pro career.

“Jason Peters came into my office this morning, and he has decided to slide over to left tackle,” said Pederson. “This is the unselfishness. This is who he is. When we talk specifically about Jason Peters, this is who he is. He sacrifices his body for the football team.”

Eagles initially intended to start Andre Dillard on the left tackle in 2020, but the 2019’s first-round pick tore his biceps during training camp and was ruled out for the season. And while Eagles originally said that Peters was to remain on the right guard, the lack of other options behind Dillard made it easier for the team to slide him to his old position and worry about RG instead.

According to Pederson, Matt Pryor, Nate Herbig, and Jack Driscoll are now candidates to start at right guard instead of Peters. Reportedly, Driscoll, who was the team’s fourth-round selection in 2020, impressed during training camp and is the favorite to get the job.
