Running back Kerryon Johnson won’t be suiting for Philadelphia Eagles after all. The team decided to release 2018’s second-round pick off of the injured reserve list.

Johnson was waived by Detroit Lions back in May but didn’t hit the free agency as the Eagles jumped on the chance to add a player with a high ceiling on their roster. However, Johnson struggled with a knee injury and ended up being waived by Philly as well. The move came with an injury designation, keeping the 24-year-old on the Eagles’ injured reserve.

By releasing him now, Philadelphia gives Johnson a chance to sign with another team and play in 2021 once he gets healthy.

The Lions had high hopes for Kerryon Johnson when they selected him with the No.43 pick three years ago. And while Auburn product showed flashes of talent and exciting playmaking during a couple of seasons in Detroit, knee issues prevented him from making an impact with the franchise.

Johnson had a great start to his rookie campaign, rushing for 641 yards and three touchdowns while adding 32 receptions for 213 yards and one score in the first ten games. However, his standout first season as a pro ended prematurely after he injured his knee in Week 11 against Carolina Panthers.

Knee injuries continued to plague Johnson in 2019 and 2020, as he managed to pick up only 584 rushing yards combined.
