The Philadelphia Eagles thrashed the Kansas City Chiefs in a 40-22 Super Bowl LIX win to claim their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Philly’s quarterback Jalen Hurts played an efficient game and accounted for three touchdowns to get the Super Bowl MVP honors.
The Eagles have now redeemed themselves for a crushing Super Bowl LVII loss against the Chiefs in the 2022 season. On the other hand, Kansas City failed in their bid to become the first team to win three straight championships in the Super Bowl era.
While Hurts and his offense were largely unstoppable, it was the defense, helmed by legendary defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, which was the key to Philly’s run to a Super Bowl win. Fangio opted to rely on the defensive line and steer away from the blitz, and it proved to be a winning formula.
Chiefs’ superstar QB Patrick Mahomes never managed to get going, being sacked six times, including a strip sack, and suffering 11 QB hits. On top of that, the Eagles intercepted Mahomes twice and both times ended with a touchdown on the ensuing possession.
“Defense wins championships,” Hurts said after the game. “We saw how they played today. We saw the difference they made in the game. They gave us opportunities, gave us short fields. And we’re able to do what we do.”
Hurts had 221 passing yards and two passing touchdowns while also rushing for 72 yards and a “Tush Push” score. Wideouts DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown each caught a TD while star running back Saquon Barkley finished with 57 rushing yards.
Mahomes threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns while also being the Chiefs’ leading rusher with 25 yards. Rookie Xavier Worthy had eight catches for 157 yards and two TDs while tight end Travis Kelce only managed four receptions for 39 yards.
