Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is undergoing a medical with the club, prior to closing a $29 million move to Stamford Bridge.

When asked for an update by reporters, Lampard had the following to say, “He is having a medical as we speak. Subject to that being okay, then he will be a Chelsea player.” This news comes after much media speculation surrounding the Blues’ interest in the Rennes shot-stopper.

This move comes as the club’s patience for current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga continues to run thin. While he remains the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, the 25-year-old player has struggled at the London club in recent times. In Chelsea’s last outing, Kepa made a costly error that resulted in a Liverpool goal, and by extension, a humiliating home defeat.

All personal feelings aside, Lampard insists that Kepa still has an opportunity to prove himself at Chelsea. “I don’t know what benefits there are in the long run, football is in your hands. Competition is a regular thing. We have brought Mendy in for that competition. It’s in everyone’s hands to get into the squad. I think it is the hardest position, because of the individual nature of it. I have to be sympathetic to that point. Last year I changed a few times, it’s a different thought process. We are always striving for the best performance.”
