Closer Edwin Diaz has agreed to a five-year, $102 million contract with the New York Mets, sources confirmed on Monday. The deal, which is pending the player taking a physical, contains both an opt-out and a no-trade clause with an option for a sixth year.

This marks the first nine-figure deal in MLB history for a closer, while also taking the position into the $20 million-plus range.

Since arriving at the Mets in 2018, Diaz has emerged as a star player for the team, finishing last season with 32 saves, a 1.31 ERA, and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings, helping the Mets to win 101 games in total.

Prior to signing for the Mets, Diaz was a heavily relied upon player at the Seattle Mariners, where he lead the majors with 57 saves in 2018. This figure saw Diaz tie with Bobby Thigpen for the second most saves in a single season of baseball.

Diaz earned $10 million this year, a figure that many fans believed was well deserved due to his 32 saves, a 1.31 ERA, and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings last season.
