MLS could soon welcome another high-profile coaching name. Javier Aguirre, who previously coached Mexico’s national team on two occasions, recently told ESPN Deportes that he is interested in coaching in the United States.

“MLS is attractive to me,” said Aguirre while speaking about his next challenge.

Aguirre explained that he is attracted by the progress MLS made in recent years while also thinking that the clubs are more open to giving coaches time to carry out their projects unlike some other leagues.

The 61-year-old coach also revealed that he already had contacts with MLS teams in the past, being in the running for several jobs.

“Yes, I’ve been in touch [with teams],” he added. “I have a couple of people in the USA and there have been opportunities and my name was in the mix. They decided on other options, but my name is there.”

Javier Aguirre last worked in Spanish La Liga, where he took over Leganes midway through 2019/20 and was tasked with saving the club from relegation. He failed to do so and the club ended up deciding not to renew his contract.

Aguirre also coached Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, and Espanyol among other clubs. On an international level, he led Mexico twice while also spending time with Japan and Egypt.
