Former Spain international midfielder Ignacio Camacho announced on Monday that he is ending his soccer career. Camacho, who spent the last three seasons with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, retired at the age of 30.

The reason why Camacho decided to retire ahead of time is a nagging ankle injury that kept him away from the field for two years.

“I fought non-stop to get back on the pitch,” said Camacho in a statement. “But I’m leaving safe in the knowledge that I did all that I could. I gave it absolutely everything I’d got to get back to doing what I love best, and that’s playing football.”

Camacho suffered the injury shortly after joining Wolfsburg ahead of the 2017/18 season from Malaga. He underwent five surgeries on his right ankle and managed to briefly return the next season but was shut down again after just six games.

Camacho will remain with Wolfsburg despite retirement as he is set to undergo a two-year training program with the club.

Ignacio Camacho started his career with Atletico Madrid, where he played 50 games between 2007 and 2010 and helped the club win the UEFA Europa League trophy. Camacho made the biggest mark with Malaga, however, making 199 appearances over the course of six and a half seasons.

While at Malaga, Camacho received a call-up for Spain’s national team. He ended up playing one game in 2014.
