The Atlanta Falcons confirmed on Sunday that the team’s backup quarterback AJ McCarron will be out for the rest of the NFL season. This news came after McCarron suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the Falcons’  37-17 preseason loss to Miami Dolphins on Saturday. The 30-year-old quarterback began clutching at his knee after completing a pass to running back Qadree Ollison.

Following the game’s conclusion, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith expressed dismay at the thought of McCarron’s injury. “I really feel for AJ McCarron. Any time something like that happens and it’s non-contact, it’s tough when you know what these guys put into it. I feel for AJ. We’ll obviously get the MRI to confirm, but he’s heartbroken,” as ABC News reported.

Smith also lamented on how much McCarron fought to gain extra yards for his team during the intense match.

Before collapsing from his injury, McCarron completed three of six passes for 43 yards. His highlight of the game came in the form of a 7-yard run when he was tackled by Miami linebacker Sam Eguavoen. While McCarron attempted to reach the sidelines as his injury struck, he was unable to do so, with team doctors rushing onto the field to examine the quarterback.
