The Calgary Flames are not messing around. The franchise handed out another big-time deal this offseason, signing veteran MacKenzie Weegar to 8-year, $50 million contract.

Weegar had one more year left on his original deal, meaning the Flames have locked him up through the 2030-31 NHL season.

“It’s going to sink in a little later, I think. It’ll be emotional later,” said Weegar after the news became official. “I’ll call my mom and my dad. This is just crazy. I couldn’t be more thankful.”

MacKenzie Weegar received a new deal from the Flames despite not having a single official appearance for the franchise. The 28-year-old came to Calgary during the summer as part of the trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. The Flames landed forward Jonathan Huberdeau, who recently signed an eight-year, $84 million contract extension, in the same deal.

Weegar was Panthers’ seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He had to wait until late in the 2016-17 season to make his debut but went on to establish himself as a valuable player for the Florida team. The Ottawa native played a total of 306 games in the league, contributing 27 goals and 94 assists for a total of 121 points.
