Former Cubs SS Addison Russell Signs 1-Year Deal to Play in Korea

Former Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell, who was unable to find a new deal over the winter heading into the 2020 MLB season, has decided to pack his bags and head to South Korea after inking a one-year contract with the Kiwoom Heroes.

Russell, who was released by the Cubs in the offseason after a disappointing 2019 season that was marred by off the field controversy and a career-worst batting line, will look to contribute in the Korean Baseball Organization instead of trying to find work in the United States as baseball looks to ramp up next month.

The Florida native, a 2016 National League All-Star selection, batted only .237 with nine home runs and 23 RBI last season in 82 games.

The Heroes, who are currently in 3rd place in the KBO standings with a 26-17 record, have released infielder Taylor Motter in order to add Russell to their roster. The newly-signed former Cub is expected to play second base and shortstop for his new team.

Russell’s new deal is a sharp pay cut for the player who earned $4.3 million last season, as he is only set to be paid $530,000 for his season’s work in Korea.
