Gabriel Jesus scored twice to hand Arsenal a 4-1 victory over Leeds United on Saturday in what was his first game back in the starting lineup since November.

Jesus, who suffered a knee injury at the 2022 World Cup, received a standing ovation from the fans at the Emirates Stadium when he was substituted in the second half.

“Delighted for him. They all were. We were all clapping for him,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta commented after the game. “He’s been working so hard for the last four or five months with a lot of support from the team and the staff. Today he deserved the chance to start. He grabbed the opportunity with a lot of conviction and with two goals.”

The Brazilian striker handed the lead to the Gunners in the 35th minute when he successfully converted a penalty. Ben White doubled Arsenal’s lead just after the halftime break, with Jesus grabbing his second goal of the game after receiving a pass from Leandro Trossard.

While Leeds pulled one goal back, Granit Xhaka scored a fourth to seal the win for Arsenal.
