Wrexham AFC’s celebrity owners, Ryan Reynolds, and Rob McElhenney, failed in their bid to convince Gareth Bale to come out of retirement and play for their club. Bale made this clear during a recent interview at the FEVO Sport Industry Awards 2023.

After Wrexham got promoted to League Two, the fourth tier of the English soccer system, McElhenney reached out to Bale on Twitter. The actor proposed a round of golf during which he would try to convince the former Real Madrid star, an avid golf enthusiast, to “un-retire for one last magical season.” The connection made sense, considering that Wrexham is located in Wales and Bale is one of the best soccer players in Welsh history.

Bale actually responded McElhenney without saying no, fueling speculations that he is actually thinking about it.

However, it later turned out that Bale was just looking to score some free golf sessions.

“No, I don’t think so. I think I was looking more for a free round of golf off Rob,” said Bale when asked if there is anything that can tempt him out of retirement. “I’m sure we’ll have a chat and a joke, but I’m quite happy where I am — spending a lot of time with my kids, my wife, time that I’ve lost so much of over the years being committed to football.”

Gareth Bale retired in January 2023 following an unsuccessful run with Wales at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He played his last club season in MLS with LAFC, helping the club win MLS Cup.
