George Adamou Wins eMLS Cup 2020

With live sports having been put on hold for months due to the COVID pandemic, attention was shifted to the world of e-sports, where the eMLS Cup was well underway.

Held in conjunction with EA Sports, this major e-sports tournament acts as an official qualifier to the FIFA eWorld Cup. In addition, the winner of this tournament gets a cool $20,000 in prize money along with the coveted title of eMLS champion.

Having consisted of plenty of thrills and spills since its inaugural season in 2018, this year proved to be no different, with The New York Red Bull’s George Adamou winning the tournament in dramatic fashion.

While ranked as the 43rd best FIFA 20 player in the world, Adamou was a newcomer to the eMLS circuit. He nevertheless held his own, defeating the likes of Fiddle of FC Cincinatti – the winner of season one and two of the competition – in the quarterfinal stage. This match ended in dramatic fashion, with newcomer Adamou defeating the veteran 4-3 on penalties after a goalless stalemate.

Adamou then showed solid defensive work in the semifinals, keeping a clean sheet against the aggressive RemiMartinn (of LAFC) in order to clinch a 1-0 victory. He went on to defeat Didychrislito (of NYC) in the final, winning 3-2 on aggregate after two legs filled with breathtaking goals.
