Germany manager Hansi Flick has stated that his team will head in a different direction “very soon” after suffering a second consecutive elimination from the World Cup during the group stage. Despite winning 4-2 against Costa Rica during their final group game, Germany was eliminated from the group on goal difference, with Spain earning a +6 goal difference and the Germans settling for a difference of just +1.

While the Germans defeated Costa Rica 4-2 in their final game of the tournament, this victory was a case of too little too late following the team’s 2-1 loss to Japan and their 1-1 draw with Spain.

“In light of the Euros, it is difficult to talk about that right now, but we need to assess our World Cup, head into a different direction,” Flick said. “This is the next step we will take, and we will do it very soon.

One major aspect of Flick’s strategy going forward will be to phase out veteran World Cup winners from the German squad, including the likes of Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, and Mario Gotze.

Muller expressed his frustration at Germany’s early World Cup exit, calling it an “absolute catastrophe”. Group winner Japan is set to face Croatia in the Round of 16, while runners-up Spain will play against Morocco.
