Four-time All-Star Giancarlo Stanton won’t take his chances and enter the uncertain free-agent market this offseason. Instead, the 30-year-old slugger decided to opt into the remainder of his contract with the New York Yankees.

Stanton’s contract with the Yankees now runs through 2027 and will earn him $218 million over that period. He originally inked a $325 million, 13-year deal back in 2014 while he was with Miami Marlins.

Stanton’s decision makes sense due to the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic had on baseball, making the big deals and guarantees harder to come by. Also, it is hard to picture someone giving him a better deal at this point, considering his injury struggles in the recent past.

In 2019, one year removed from his big trade to Yankees, Giancarlo Stanton played only 18 games due to knee and biceps issues. He finished the campaign with three home runs and 13 RBIs while hitting .288.

This year, Stanton seemed like he was getting back on track before injuries hampered him once again. He managed to bat .255 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 23 games while missing the remainder of the games with a strained hamstring.

It is important to note that Stanton showed up in the 2020 postseason, boosting a .308 batting average and getting six home runs and 13 RBIs.
