After a surprising 2-0 start of the season, the New York Giants returned to Earth with a loss to the Dallas Cowboys during Monday Night Football. But falling to a 2-1 record might not be the worst thing that has happened in this game to the Giants. They also lost their veteran wideout Sterling Shepard to an ACL injury.

Shepard got hurt in the closing minutes of the Cowboys’ game in a truly heartbreaking way. The 29-year-old made a run to beat his man before slowing down and starting to jog after the play was over. He then simply caught his knee and went to the ground.

The Giants didn’t beat around the bushes when it came to the nature of Shepard’s injury. The head coach Brian Daboll immediately told reporters that it was an ACL tear while saying this was a significant loss for his team.

“He’s a tremendous person. He’s worked so diligently to get back,” Daboll said. “Feel so terrible for him that he’s had that injury.”

Shepard also addressed his injury on social media.

Sterling Shepard missed most of the 2021 campaign after tearing his Achilles, with the injury also coming against the Cowboys. Shepard seemed in good shape to bounce back this season, taking the role as the team’s No. 1 receiver. Before going down, he made 13 catches for 154 yards and one touchdown.
