Giants’ Nate Solder Intends to Play in 2021 after Sitting Out a Year

The New York Giants will get veteran left tackle Nate Solder back for the 2021 NFL season. That is, however, if they want him back.

In a recent telephone chat with ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Solder said that he intends to play this season. He didn’t see the field in 2020, opting to sit out due to family reasons and coronavirus pandemic concerns.

The issue with Solder playing with the Giants is his big contract. The 32-year-old veteran is set to receive a $10 million salary in 2021 while counting $16.5 million against the salary cap. Considering the projected drop in salary cap for the next season, it is unlikely the organization will be willing to pay that price.

The most likely option is that Solder restructures his contract and takes less money. While the Giants already drafted their left tackle of the future in Andrew Thomas last year, they still have holes on the offensive line that the veteran could fill.

Reportedly, the team already approached Solder about this option, and the two sides are expected to meet in the next few days for a discussion.

The Giants can also release Solder and get some salary-cap relief. They could save up to $10 million if they make it post-June 1st release.

Nate Solder joined the Giants as a free agent in 2018, inking a lucrative four-year, $62 million contract. He started all 32 games at left tackle in his first two seasons with the organization.
