San Francisco Giants have made a move that probably won’t sit well with their fans. The Giants announced on Thursday that they have released team icon Pablo Sandoval.

The move comes after Sandoval mightily struggled to make an impact this season. In 33 games he played in 2020, the 34-year-old player had just one home run and six RBIs while hitting .220.

After the news was made public, Sandoval issued a short statement on Instagram.

“It’s been an honor and privilege to play for you,” he wrote. “My heart will forever be in San Francisco.”

Pablo Sandoval started his MLB career with San Francisco Giants in 2008 and was part of the team that won three World Series titles. He was especially key for the title in 2012 when he received the Babe Ruth Award and was selected World Series MVP for his performances in the postseason.

Sandoval left Giants in 2014 to join Boston Red Sox but only spent three years with the organization before returning to San Francisco again.
