New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney is unsure if he will be able to play again this season after undergoing surgery on a few of his fingers. The player was in a hard-plastic cast and sling on Tuesday.

McKinney explained that he was in a “freak accident” during the team’s bye week. While on a sightseeing tour in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the vehicle that McKinney was in tipped over, resulting in the hospitalization of the Giant’s defensive star. He was immediately transported to a hospital in Mexico before undergoing surgery upon his return to the United States last week.

The Giants’ starting safety was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Monday, meaning that he is required to be omitted from at least four games.

When questioned about his recovery time, McKinney simply stated that there is “no timeline on it. “I’m just trying to take it day by day, do what everybody asks me to do. That is what I’m here for. I think I’ll be fine.”

In McKinney’s absence, the Giants are likely to call upon the services of rookie Dane Belton and/or Jason Pinnock to fill McKinney’s role. Both players have just two career starts to their names.
