Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is now alone at the top of England’s all-time leading goalscorer list. Kane scored from a penalty kick in England’s 2-1 win over Italy in UEFA Euro Qualifiers, getting his international tally to 54 goals. This allowed him to break a tie he previously held with former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

Kane’s goal came late in the first half after VAR awarded England a penalty kick following Leonardo Spinazzola’s handball. It allowed Three Lions to get a two-goal cushion that proved crucial down the stretch as Italy was trying to get back in the game.

Kane made his debut for England’s senior team in 2015 and needed 81 games to score 54 goals. For comparison, Rooney scored 53 goals in 120 matches. The current DC United head coach congratulated Kane on breaking his record on Twitter.

“I knew it wouldn’t take long, but that was quick,” Rooney wrote.

2023 is shaping up to be a year in which Kane is writing his name in the history books. Earlier this month, Kane also became the all-time leading goalscorer for the Spurs. By scoring a brace in a 3–1 win over Nottingham Forest, the 29-year-old Tottenham got to a figure of 270 goals, surpassing previous record-holder Jimmy Greaves.
