Inter Miami’s star striker Gonzalo Higuain announced on Monday that he would retire at the end of the 2022 MLS season. Higuain’s decision was also shared by Miami on the team’s official social media.

“After the most wonderful career I could have had, I feel that football has given me so much,” Higuain told reporters on Monday. “Many thanks to those who have always believed in me … the time has come to say goodbye.”

Before he steps away from professional soccer, Higuain will try to help Miami make the playoffs. Inter is currently in possession of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but has the same number of points as Columbus Crew behind them. There are two more games left to be played in the regular season.

Gonzalo Higuain started his career with Argentina powerhouse River Plate, where he spent two seasons before making a switch to La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2007. Higuain scored 121 goals in 264 appearances in seven seasons with Los Blancos, after which he embarked on stints with Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan, and Chelsea.

Higuain arrived at Inter Miami in 2020 as a centerpiece of the club’s project but had a rather disappointing start to his MLS career. He only managed to score one goal in his first nine games before bouncing back with 12 goals in 2022. The 34-year-old has 14 goals this season.
