The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly closing in on making Urban Meyer their next head coach. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jags and Meyer engaged in “advanced talks” in recent days and might have an agreement by the end of the week.

Meyer is already assembling the coaching staff and working on preparation if he decides to take the job. He is believed to be highly interested in un-retiring and working in the NFL.

The Jaguars are motivated to get the deal soon as they are facing competition with the LA Chargers. Recent reports suggested that the Chargers also have Meyer on top of their board, with the two sides engaging in exploratory talks earlier in the week.

Urban Meyer has a reputation as one of the best college coaches of all time. He won three national championships while compiling a 187–32 record during his stints with Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State.

Meyer initially decided to retire from coaching in 2018 due to health reasons, but the opportunity to make a transition to the NFL made him reconsider the decision.

If Meyer takes the Jags’ job, he would have an opportunity to work with a generational talent in quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The latter is expected to be taken by Jacksonville with the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Meyer would be able to shape the roster to his liking as well, considering the Jaguars have a projected $80 million in cap space for next season.
