Veteran midfielder James Milner will remain a Liverpool player for at least the 2022-23 season. The club confirmed the news on Monday, announcing that Milner inked a one-year extension

Milner was set to leave the club as a free agent this summer, but the Premier League side made an effort to keep him around. Manager Jurgen Klopp appreciates his contributions on and off the pitch and believes it would hurt his team if the 36-year-old player walks away.

“A lot is often made of James’ leadership skills and his influence in the dressing room, and of course, that’s correct and justified, but nobody should overlook his quality on the pitch, where he continues to perform to a level that meant we simply couldn’t afford to lose him,” said Klopp in a statement.

Milner, who previously suited up for Aston Villa and Manchester City, among other clubs, joined the Reds in 2015. The former England international went on to establish himself as a key member of the team, mostly thanks to his experience and ability to play multiple positions. He won six trophies while in Liverpool including Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Despite his age, Milner made significant contributions to the team’s unsuccessful quadruple pursuit in 2021-22. He ended up making 39 appearances in all games and contributed with three assists.
