New York Jets’ linebacker Avery Williamson has decided to take a pay cut according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Williamson was entering the final year of his three-year, $22.50 million contract and was set to make $6 million in 2020. However, according to new terms, the 28-year-old player will now make just $3.5 million. He gets $1 million guaranteed while he can earn another $1.5 million in incentives.
The move helped the Jets get some badly needed breathing room, clearing them $3.75 million in cap space.
While the restructure might bring less money for Avery Williamson, it could also help him get his career back on track. Williamson missed 2019 with an ACL injury and is looking to have a comeback year. Jets are the best place to do so, as he is poised for a prominent role considering the organization lost C.J. Mosley for 2020 with the Pro Bowler opting out due to coronavirus-related concerns.
Williamson signed with the Jets back in 2018, after spending four years with Tennessee Titans, and immediately delivered a career season. He finished the year with 120 tackles, 3.0 sacks, six pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one interception.
