Jets Reportedly Trying to Move Starting Safety Marcus Maye

New York Jets seem to be more active in the trade market than anyone realizes. According to a recent report by New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Jets are trying to trade safety Marcus Maye for almost a year now and continue to take calls about the 27-year-old.

Mehta reports that Jets’ head coach Adam Gates wanted to see Maye gone since he joined the organization in 2019, with general manager Joe Douglas having a serious discussion about the player with interested parties ever since. However, Douglas didn’t get his asking price so he decided to continue waiting for a better offer.

The issue in Douglas’ patient approach is that Marcus Maye, Jets’ second-round pick, only has one year left on his deal. While the team can always let Maye walk in the free agency and get a complimentary pick in return, they can arguably extract a lot more value in a trade.

Maye is coming off a productive season in 2019, starting all 16 games and contributing with 65 tackles, seven pass deflections, and one interception. On almost any other NFL team, this would bring him an extension, but the Jets seem to have a different way of doing things.

The scenario in which Jets extend Maye is unlikely, as the organization already got his replacement by drafting University of California safety and return specialist Ashtyn Davis in the third round of 2020 NFL Draft.
