Johnny Cueto’s debut with the Miami Marlins on Monday night was cut short after he started experiencing bicep tightness in the second innings of the Marlins’ 11-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

“Ever since the beginning of spring training, it’s been tightening on me,” Cueto said, having allowed Joey Gallo to score a three-pointer shortly before his exit. “We will have the imaging done to see where I am. I didn’t want to leave. I want to compete, but you also can’t force things because it was my first outing.”

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker confirmed after the heavy loss that Cueto had been experiencing this bicep issue since spring training, however, the right-handed pitcher continued to push through it.

Schumaker further divulged that Cueto began experiencing discomfort after the first inning, at which point the Marlins’ medical team check up on him. Once it was clear that the pain would persist, Schumaker decided to pull him from the game so as not to worsen Cueto’s injury.
