After two and a half tumultuous seasons at the reins of Manchester United, the team has fired Portuguese coach José Mourinho.

Man U’s search for a new head coach will be highly publicized, but in the meantime, the club will appoint a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Mourinho, one of the most successful managers of all time, leaves Manchester United with the team in 6th place in the English Premier League, 19 points behind first-place Liverpool.

After a tumultuous tenure in Manchester, which included the 2017 Europa League title, riffs with star players including Paul Pogba as well as the media, and a disappointing early exit in the Round of 16 in last year’s Champions League, the English club lost patience with Mourinho and let him go.

Despite his firing, signs point to Mourinho not being without a job for long. He has already been rumored as a possible candidate for the position at his former club, Real Madrid, if things don’t work out with their current manager, Santiago Solari.

Mourinho leaves a complicated legacy at Manchester United, having won three trophies in his first season (Europa League, EFL Cup, and the FA Community Shield), but was ultimately unable to accomplish what Manchester United ownership hoped to achieve with his hiring in 2016.
