The Washington Commanders owners Dan and Tanya Snyder have reached a preliminary nonexclusive deal to sell their NFL franchise to the investment group being led by Josh Harris, sources confirmed on Thursday. The sale is expected to be around $6.05 billion.

Although the nonexclusive deal has been fully financed by the Harris-led consortium, the sale contract has not yet been signed, meaning that another team could swoop in and hijack the team if they have the finances to do so.

The $6.05 billion deal would top the previous record sale for an NFL franchise, which happened in August last year when Walmart heir Rob Walton bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion.

Once signed, the nonexclusive deal will not be approved until the upcoming NFL meeting on May 22 to 24 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following an examination of the sale documents by the NFL’s eight-member finance committee, the sale will be put to a vote of the other 31 team owners.

Harris is a co-owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and participated in the bidding process for the Denver Broncos last season before the Walton group won the race.
