The New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing will once again be a frequently seen face in the Madison Square Garden, albeit in a different role. The Knicks announced on Friday that Ewing is rejoining the franchise in the role of “basketball ambassador.”
According to the announcement, Ewing’s role will include providing assistance in both basketball and business departments, and he will work closely with head coach Tom Thibodeau and front office led by president Leon Rose.
“As I said the day my number 33 jersey lifted into the rafters at MSG, I will always be a Knick, and I will always be a New Yorker. I can’t wait to get started in this new position and to officially be back with the organization that I love so much,” Ewing said in a statement. “The Garden has always been my home, and I’m looking forward to working with Leon Rose, Coach Thibodeau, the team, and everyone else that makes this place so special.”
Patrick Ewing started his playing career as the Knicks’ first overall pick in 1985. He spent 16 years with the franchise, making 11 All-Star appearances and helping the New York team reach the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999. Ewing is a franchise leader in a number of categories, including points (23,665), rebounds (10,759), and games played (1,039).
After ending his playing career, Ewing worked as an assistant for several NBA franchises and was most recently head coach of Georgetown Hoyas.
