Lazio forward Ciro Immobile was hospitalized after he was involved in a car crash in the Italian capital city of Rome on Sunday. This came after the 33-year-old player scored a penalty in Lazio’s 3-0 victory over Spezia on Friday night.

Italian media sources reported that Immobile’s car collided with a train. He fractured a rib and suffered a back injury as a result. The club later confirmed the validity of these media reports.

“Earlier today, following a car accident, footballer Ciro Immobile suffered a spinal distortion injury and a compound fracture of the right XI rib,” Lazio confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

The Serie A club then revealed that Immobile is in stable condition and remains under supervision for his injuries in the emergency medicine department of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Polyclinic in Rome.

According to Sky Sports Italy, Immobile traveled in the car with his two daughters and it is believed that the tram skipped a red light. Several others including passengers on the tram were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Immobile has proven to be a key member of Lazio’s success this season, scoring 10 goals to help the club rise to second place in the Serie A table this season.
