Linebacker Kyle Van Noy confirmed on Tuesday that he has been released by the Miami Dolphins. Van Noy issued a statement through the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, saying that the Dolphins’ decision made him feel “surprised and disappointed.”

The Dolphins moved on from Van Noy just one year after giving him a four-year, $51 million contract in free agency. The organization reportedly first tried to find a trade partner for the 29-year-old linebacker but failed to generate interest from other NFL teams. They also approached the player’s representatives with a pay-cut proposal but without success.

By releasing Van Noy, Miami saved around $9.75 million in cap space. This now gives them $36 million, according to ESPN, which they will most likely use to address some pressing issues in free agency.

Van Noy played 14 games for the Dolphins in 2020, filling in on both inside and outside linebacker positions. He finished the campaign with 69 tackles, six sacks, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Before arriving in Miami, Kyle Van Noy spent time with the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots. He won two Super Bowls with the Patriots and was selected into their All-Decade Team.
