Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton is reportedly on the verge of leaving Mercedes and joining Ferrari. Hamilton is expected to make a switch in the 2025 F1 season.

Hamilton signed a new contract extension with Mercedes in 2023 that was supposed to keep him with the team for at least two more seasons. However, according to ESPN, the second year was an option, and the 39-year-old driver is now looking to embrace a new challenge.

Hamilton spent his entire F1 career with Mercedes teams, McLaren Mercedes and Mercedes-AMG Petronas, and established himself as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time. He is tied with legendary Michael Schumacher for most championships and holds a number of records, including most career wins at 103.

However, in recent years, Hamilton hasn’t been able to consistently compete for championships. After finishing second on the F1 Driver Standings in a dramatic fashion in 2021, he failed to win a single race in the following two seasons.

Ferrari recently gave a new contract to Charles Leclerc but kept the status of their No. 2 driver, Carlos Sainz, uncertain after the 2024 season. It now becomes clear why.

By bringing a big name in Hamilton, Ferrari is likely hoping to end their championship drought. Their most recent title came in 2007, thanks to Kimi Räikkönen.
